Power window repair

A window stuck down, stuck up or crawling. Power Window Repair is listed in Brent's own words on the Brent's Glass Facebook page, next to Automotive Glass and Chip Repair.

A window that drops, crawls or goes quiet

Brent's Glass lists three things on its Facebook page: Automotive Glass, Chip Repair, Power Window Repair. The third one tends to start as a small annoyance and then, one morning, shows up as a driver's window that will not come back up.

The symptoms people recognise are specific. The glass drops into the door the moment you touch the switch. It climbs slowly, tilts in its track, or stops halfway. It grinds or clicks while it moves. It works on some mornings and not on others. Or the switch is pressed and nothing at all happens.

Those symptoms do not all point at the same part, which is why the first conversation matters. Call (478) 972-7741 and describe exactly what the window does, along with the year, make and model. Brent will tell you where the job is best done. He started out as Brent's Mobile Glass and now also works out of Suite D on Lochlyn Place in Bonaire, so ask rather than assume.

How a window gets traced to the part

In general, a power window is a short chain. The switch sends power to a small motor, the motor turns a regulator, and the regulator, either a pair of folding arms or a cable running over pulleys, lifts the glass along its tracks. A fault anywhere in that chain looks identical from the driver's seat, which is why diagnosis comes before any part is ordered.

This kind of fault is usually sorted out from the inside of the door. The trim panel comes off, the weather barrier behind it is peeled back, and the regulator, the cables and the motor can be seen and tested. A window that grinds or clicks tends to point at the regulator or a frayed cable. A window that does nothing, with the motor silent, can be the switch or the motor. Glass that has dropped inside the door usually means the lifting mechanism has let go.

The pane itself is normally sound. It is supported or lifted clear while the mechanism is dealt with, then set back on it. That is one reason an auto glass shop is a natural place to bring a window problem: the person handling the mechanism is already used to handling the glass.

After the repair, and why not to wait

A window stuck down is more than an inconvenience. It leaves the seats open to the next Georgia thunderstorm and the car open to anyone walking past. If it is stuck, a sheet of plastic taped to the outside of the door frame is a stopgap for a day or two, not a plan, and the sooner someone looks at it the less you have to improvise.

Once the window is working again, run it all the way up and all the way down a few times with the door open, then with the door closed. Listen for the click or grind that started the whole thing. If it comes back, say so; a noise that returns is information about which part is next.

Everything here is the general way these faults are handled, not a list of parts or brands Brent has promised. The honest next step is the phone call: describe the window, and he will say what he thinks it needs.

Door glass and window work belong together

If the pane itself is what broke, that is a different job with a different fit, covered on the back glass and door glass page. And if you would rather not drive a car with a dead window across Houston County, read how mobile auto glass works with Brent before you decide where the car should be.
