Rear and side glass

Back glass and door glass

Liftgates, rear sliders and side windows. Tempered glass that shatters to pieces, replaced whole, in Bonaire and across Houston County.

When a rear or side window lets go all at once

A windshield cracks and spreads. Rear and side glass usually does not. It is typically tempered, which means that when it fails it fails completely: the whole pane drops into small pieces across the seats, the door cavity, the cargo floor and the driveway. One minute the window is there, the next you are looking at an open frame and vacuuming.

That is a different problem from a windshield, which is laminated, with a plastic layer that holds it together even when it breaks. A liftgate on a minivan, a sliding rear window on a pickup, a side window in a door: each of these is replaced as a whole pane, not repaired.

The photos on this page cover both ends of it. One pairs a Toyota Sienna liftgate with its glass fully out against the same liftgate with new tinted glass fitted. Another shows the rear slider of a white pickup with fresh orange retention tape across the glass. Call (478) 972-7741, say which window it is and what the vehicle is, and he will talk you through the job.

How the old glass comes out and the new pane goes in

The first job after a tempered break is cleanup, and it is a bigger part of the work than it sounds. Shards go down inside a door, into the seams of a liftgate, under seat rails. On this kind of job the pieces are vacuumed out of the cargo area or the door cavity before the new glass is anywhere near the opening, because a fragment left in a channel can scratch the new pane or rattle for years.

Back glass has details a side window does not. Most rear windows carry thin printed defroster lines and the connections that feed them, so the replacement has to be the right pane for that vehicle, with its lines and its tint, and the lines are worth testing before you leave. A pickup slider adds its own parts: the moving panel, the track it runs in and the seals around it. The new glass is only as good as the seal it sits against.

A fixed rear glass is set into the opening and held with tape while it settles, which is the orange tape you can see across the new panes in these photos. Door glass is a different fit. It rides in the door on the same track and mechanism a power window uses, so door glass and power window repair are close cousins.

Aftercare and why the details matter

A new rear or side pane is held by more than looks. Leave any retention tape in place for as long as you are told, go easy on the doors and the liftgate for the first day, and put off the car wash. One customer wrote that Brent "Provided me with great directions for aftercare," and that is the habit worth copying: ask him what applies to your vehicle and the weather on the day.

Tint is part of the same conversation. Brent's reviews mention "top quality tint glass," and window tinting is something the Suite D door advertises, so if you want the new rear pane to match the rest of the vehicle, say so at the start.

Glass that breaks all at once leaves the car open in the meantime. A plastic sheet taped to the outside of the frame will get you through a night. It will not get you through a storm, so call early.

One shop for the glass and the window that carries it

If the glass in a door is fine but the window will not move, that is a mechanism problem, covered under power window repair. If the break is on the windshield instead, start at windshield replacement, where the glass is laminated and the job runs differently.

Brent works out of Suite D on Lochlyn Place in Bonaire and still drives out to driveways around Warner Robins and Houston County, so tell him which suits you.
